A winning brand amongst the staff at LD Mountain Centre, we were one of the first retailers in the UK to support this great hardcore, technical Swedish brand, the largest supplier of outdoor equipment in Scandinavia. Haglöfs is characterised by its strong, clean designs, from fantastic Gore-Tex shell jackets and pants, soft shells, mid-layers, fleece, some of the best trekking trousers, like the Mountain Rugged pant, on the market to niche, innovative ski touring/ski moutaineering pieces, like the Couloir Jacket. Haglöfs enjoys a strong core of followers that remain steadfastly loyal to the brand once they’ve tried the products.
“The best equipment is the kind you least notice”.
In 1914, Victor Haglöfs had finished sewing his first batch of rucksacks and set off to try to sell them to local foresters and farmers. Ninety years on in the business, Victor Haglöfs’ desire, above all, to make gear that really worked has remained the keystone of the company. Especially as products had to function during some of the most extreme and demanding activities, withstanding the harsh climates of the Nordic regions.
Haglöfs’ technical, alpine inspired designs, using top materials including Gore-Tex, Windstopper and Polartec, whilst primarily constructed to withstand the Scandinavian climate, are therefore perfectly suited to the UK’s own particular type of weather. Haglofs are one of the most innovative companies on the market, producing designs that soon become industry standard. Their fundamental idea that their gear must really work, especially under the most extreme conditions, means that the design of the smallest detail must be taken into account as well as the kit as a whole. Features must be easy to understand and thus easy to use. Usability of Haglöfs products is key, a piece of clothing for instance should not be limited to one specific activity, but work in many situations, working as a part of a layer-on-layer system which can thus be made to work in virtually any conditions, all-year round. The more useful, the better the investment for the customer.
Last year Haglöfs introduced their ‘Ski Our Way’ series, specific equipment for the back-country, ski mountaineering, free skiing and heli-skiing markets. The huge success and enormous demand that it generated last season, with hits like the Couloir jacket and Spitz jacket have subsequently inspired many more products to be designed.
Haglöfs’ are on a constant search for ways to develop their products, aware of cutting edge technologies and often being the first to exploit them. Sewing a shell jacket from a single, continuous piece of material instead of lots of smaller pieces, may be more difficult to achieve, but is by far the best way to avoid seams that chafe against the back and shoulders when you are wearing a backpack or a climbing harness. Products are stripped of unnecessary details so that they do not weigh a gram
