Berghaus

Berghaus was born in 1966 out of our shop, LD Mountain Centre, the original home of Berghaus. Berghaus means Mountain House in German, the L &D from Peter Lockie and Gordon Davison, two passionate climbers from Newcastle, who started their own shop to sell the sort of outdoor clothing and equipment that met their own exacting needs. Their philosophy, became the Berghaus philosophy – to make the best and most technically advanced outdoor gear possible. In those 43 years Berghaus have produced simple, no nonsense outdoor clothing, backpacks and rucksacks that quietly work hard to keep people comfortable and safe, helping millions of people live out their dreams in the great outdoors.

People often talk about a brand’s DNA, a time-line of products and innovations that leads all the way back to the core principles of that brand when it started. In fact the Berghaus DNA, and in particular it’s Extrem™ clothing and rucksacks range, the ultimate expression of the Berghaus brand, is very much like yours; because Gordon and Peter were just ordinary guys, aspiring and often pioneering adventurers, wanting to get out in any conditions imaginable and come home again, they designed Berghaus from the outset to provide 100% function on anything from sunny alpine Arêtes to hoare encrusted Scottish squeeze chimneys on the Ben.

Over the years, the brand has continuously looked to push the boundaries, it has been about maximum performance with minimum complexity, using the highest quality materials and the most advanced construction techniques available. Manifested in Berghaus’ super technical Extrem™ range, with pieces like the men’s Attrition jacket, the men’s and women’s Furnace Down jacket and the Extrem Arete backpacks, alongside it runs Berghaus’ Mountain range, containing core pieces like the Mera Peak jacket that cemented Berghaus’ reputation, whilst Berghaus’ other ranges of Trail and Everyday Outdoors, contain the long standing favourites like the Cornice and Glissade jacket, the Spectrum fleece or the waterproof Deluge Overtrousers, for outdoor enthusiasts and every day outdoor consumers who also demand functionality, quality and performance.
